      The preparation of tantalum is the process of reducing tantalum compounds to tantalum by reducing agent. The pure tantalum compound has five tantalum oxide, five tantalum chloride, five tantalum fluoride and fluorine salt (such as K2TaF7). The reducing agent contains active metals such as sodium and magnesium and carbon and hydrogen. The melting point of tantalum is as high as 3669K, so it is powdered or sponge metal after reduction. Only after further smelting or refining can the dense metal be obtained.

   The preparation methods of tantalum mainly include tantalum powder produced by sodium thermal reduction, tantalum production by carbothermal reduction and the production of tantalum powder by molten salt electrolysis. Sodium thermal reduction of potassium fluoro tantalate is the most widely used tantalum production method in the world. The tantalum powder produced by this method is characterized by its complex shape and large specific surface area, and is suitable for manufacturing capacitors. Carbothermal reduction of five tantalum oxide is a mature tantalum production method in industry. However, because of its high purity, it is not as widely used as sodium reduction method. The molten salt electrolysis method is divided into two ways: electrolysis containing oxygen and electrolysis without electrolyte. Molten salt electrolysis can only produce metallurgical grade tantalum powder. Five tantalum hydrogen reduction of fluoride is considered to be the most potential tantalum production method, but it has not been used in industrial production because of the high requirements for equipment and environmental protection.
