1.New application
The main way to solve the low temperature ductility and high temperature oxidation of molybdenum is to develop an advanced composite based on disilicide (MoSi2).Mo02 formed by the contact between molybdenum and oxygen is sublimated at 800 C, and a yellow-white pan is obtained when it is condensed. This has caused serious engineering problems to give full play to the superiority in high temperature strength and creep resistance.Silicon-rich coatings with self-healing ability were used for this purpose, but the thermal cycling resistance of the coatings was very poor. The Mo-Si-B composite with molybdenum disilicide as matrix has excellent high temperature strength and oxidation resistance, but its ductility is poor, so it is limited to small batch commercial products.
In order to solve the ductility , the composition range of the Mo-Si-B composite has been determined recently. Besides excellent oxidation resistance, the mechanical properties of the composite at elevated temperature are comparable to those of TZM alloy. The composite material takes Mo5SiB (T2) as the matrix phase and metal molybdenum as the second phase. The ductility of the composites is improved by the metal phase, and the self healing oxide scale can be formed by the matrix phase. At present, the Mo-6Ti-2.2Si-1.1B composites with titanium added at the same time are exposed to air for 2 hours at 1370 C. The composites can hardly be changed with the naked eye, which is superior to TZM. This is a great achievement of molybdenum based alloys.
2.Other applications
Molybdenum has very low vapor pressure under the temperature and pressure of vacuum furnace. Therefore, the molybdenum parts have the least pollution to the workpiece or working substance in the furnace, and the evaporation loss certainly will not restrict the service life of high temperature such as heating elements and heat insulation encapsulation.
The high temperature strength of molybdenum in the manufacture of glass products makes it the most ideal electrode and processing and processing equipment for rapid heating. Molybdenum is chemically compatible with most of the glass components, and it will not cause harmful chromogenic effects due to the dissolution of small amounts in the glass bath. As a heating electrode in a glass melting furnace, its life span can be as long as 3~5 years.
